    Arkadelphia Post Office Records

    The original Clark County post office was established at the home of pioneer Jacob Barkman along the Caddo River in the early nineteenth century. Arkadelphia became the hub of Clark County\u27s postal service after it became the county seat in the 1840s. In 1916, work began on a new post office in downtown Arkadelphia on Sixth Street, and the structure was completed in 1918. In 1963 work began on another new post office which was completed in 1965. The 1918 post office building currently houses a sporting goods store. Allen B. Syler (1926-2002) donated this collection. After serving in Army Air Corps during World War II, the Scott County, Arkansas, native became a long-time postal service employee at the Arkadelphia office. Syler was also well-known as a local historian. This collection contains reports, newsclippings, correspondence, photographs, and documents pertaining to the construction of the Arkadelphia post office in 1916-1918. It also includes newsclippings pertaining to the operation of the post office from the 1950s to the 1980s and significant events in the lives of some of its employees. There are also some research notes collected by Allen Syler on the early history of the Arkadelphia post office as well as artifacts (postal service patches, buttons, and stamps)

    Minnie Logan Jarnagin, a member of a pioneer Clark County family and granddaughter of John Crow McLaughlin, was born November 25, 1878, and died March 6, 1968. Jarnagin taught piano lessons for many years. She was the wife of John H. Jarnagin and a member of the First Methodist Church of Arkadelphia. The items in this collection were retrieved from Jarnagin\u27s home by a neighbor after Jarnigan\u27s death.     Personal and family papers comprise a large portion of this collection. Miss Enslow collected numerous newspaper and magazine clippings on a variety of subjects, especially those dealing with socially prominent individuals on the local, national, and international levels. Too, she saved many items of correspondence between members of her family. Magazines, booklets, scrapbooks, and books are also included in this part of the collection. Most notable among the books is the Kelly Family Bible, which belonged to her maternal ancestors. Copies of many of her columns and articles are included, along with other items relating to her career as a journalist. Her writings deal chiefly with Huntington “society” from the 1920\u27s to the 1970\u27s. Many photographs are included in this collection, many of which were published in the newspaper. Other photos are of Miss Enslow, her family, and friends. Correspondence from notable persons and friends is also included, as well as correspondence relating to her activities as civic leader. Bryant was well-known for successfully arguing the case of Mallory v. United States, 354 U.S. 499 (1957) before the Supreme Court. In doing so, he earned an appointment to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in 1965, and in 1977 became Chief Judge, serving until 1981. he collection includes correspondence, publications, photographs, ephemera, artifacts (predominantly awards).
